Derby County 0-3 Liverpool: Player ratings

Loris Karius 7.5

Karius made his Liverpool debut and looked a very confident goalkeeper. He had a couple of dodgy moments with his feet at times but nothing overly concerning, the German bailed out Henderson’s poor error when Karius was quick out of his area to clear the danger. Constantly on his toes and with our high pressing game he could be the goalkeeper we need.

Karius could of put himself in contention for the game with Hull after a good game here.

Nathaniel Clyne 7.3

Clyne never really seems to get a rest, he plays nearly every game and is always consistent. We are so thin in this area it’s unreal but we only play a game a week this overall this season so its not a massive concern. Clyne got forward well and helped out in attacks as he normally does but his end product on the final ball could improve at times.

Joel Matip 7.2

Matip put in another really composed game tonight and looked so dominant whenever Derby got forward. That’s four good performances in a row now and if he continues he could prove to be bargain of the summer as he arrived on a free transfer. Looks good with any partner to, tonight he played with Klaven and he has also played next to Lucas and Lovren in recent games with Matip impressing in all of them.

Ragnar Klaven 7.3

Klaven made his comeback from a small injury tonight and performances like this will continue to push Mamadou Sakho further down the pecking order. Got his first goal for Liverpool with a neat finish where he had to sort his feet out and he looked comfortable at the back all game.

Predicted starting eleven for EFL third round tie with Derby

Goalkeeper

Loris Karius

This is certain to happen, as Klopp has already stated Karius will make his debut later on. A cup game is the right moment to throw in Karius without too much pressure on him. Joel Matip made his debut in the EFL cup tie against Burton Albion and has started every game since then so Karius needs a good solid game here to really put the pressure on Simon Mignolet.

Defence

National Clyne

Clyne seems to start every game for Liverpool and so rarely misses a game. We are so thin in this area that Clyne can’t be rested too many times at all. Our back up right back options are youngsters Conor Randall and Trent Alexandre Arnold so we are very thin in this area so I expect Clyne to start again.

Lucas Leiva

Klopp may choose to rest first choice centre back pairing Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren for this cup game and give other players a chance. Lovren has only just recovered from an eye injury and Matip iis only just reaching full match fitness. There is a case for Mamadou Sakho  to start this game but he isn’t fully match fit yet so I expect Lucas to get the nod.

Ragnar Klaven

Klaven started our first two league games of the season but since then Joel Matip has replaced him as most people expected. Klaven picked up a injury on the recent international break for Estonia and this is why he hasn’t featured on the bench either.

Alberto Moreno

James Milner has replaced Moreno as our starting left back but is now 32 years old so he could do with a deserved rest. This offers a big opportunity to the much maligned Spanish fullback to prove to Klopp he can improve defensively and grow into the role.

Karius hints at first team place as he rejects the chance to represent Germany at the Olympics

KariusLoris Karius has told of a conversation with Reds boss Jurgun Klopp which resulted in him giving up the opportunity to represent Germany at the Olympic games.

Germany wanted the 23 year old to represent them but this would of resulted in Karius missing the opening two games of the Premier League season.

After a chat with Klopp the German goalkeeper opted to put club before country as he bids to be in the starting eleven for the start of the season.

“I spoke with the manager and we said that it didn’t make sense for me to go to the Olympics as I would miss the first two league games of the season and of course I want to play in them,” Karius explained.

“We agreed together I wouldn’t be going. First I spoke with Jürgen and then together we spoke with the German people who wanted me to go. The priority is the club. It’s more important that I am available for the start of the season.”

Karius played 45 minutes in the Reds preseason 5-0 win over Fleetwood town and Karius is relishing the challenge ahead of him.

He added: “What we talked about stays with us. Of course I know a club like this has more competition.

“It’s a bigger club and better players means more competition, but I am not scared of anything. If I was, I wouldn’t have come here. I have a good feeling.

“I wouldn’t come here to sit on the bench. That doesn’t make sense. I’m not a ‘keeper who hasn’t shown his ability. I’m a good goalkeeper and I’ve shown that a lot.

“I could have stayed at Mainz and played there. If I wasn’t sure I could come and play here this season, I wouldn’t have done it.”

Karius states he is happy to be back in England after having a 5 year stay in Manchester in the youth academy of Manchester City.

“When I left Man City I was still really young and I decided to go somewhere else to get some first-team experience,” he continued.

“I took the step to Mainz. I needed to join a smaller club to get my career going as a young player – I did everything right with that move.

“I had almost three full seasons in the Bundesliga there. I am still young but I’ve played around 100 games in the Bundesliga so I have some experience.

“I thought it was time to take the next step in my career. The opportunity to join Liverpool came up and I thought it was a good next step for me.”
