Derby County 0-3 Liverpool: Player ratings

Loris Karius 7.5

Karius made his Liverpool debut and looked a very confident goalkeeper. He had a couple of dodgy moments with his feet at times but nothing overly concerning, the German bailed out Henderson’s poor error when Karius was quick out of his area to clear the danger. Constantly on his toes and with our high pressing game he could be the goalkeeper we need.

Karius could of put himself in contention for the game with Hull after a good game here.

Nathaniel Clyne 7.3

Clyne never really seems to get a rest, he plays nearly every game and is always consistent. We are so thin in this area it’s unreal but we only play a game a week this overall this season so its not a massive concern. Clyne got forward well and helped out in attacks as he normally does but his end product on the final ball could improve at times.

Joel Matip 7.2

Matip put in another really composed game tonight and looked so dominant whenever Derby got forward. That’s four good performances in a row now and if he continues he could prove to be bargain of the summer as he arrived on a free transfer. Looks good with any partner to, tonight he played with Klaven and he has also played next to Lucas and Lovren in recent games with Matip impressing in all of them.

Ragnar Klaven 7.3

Klaven made his comeback from a small injury tonight and performances like this will continue to push Mamadou Sakho further down the pecking order. Got his first goal for Liverpool with a neat finish where he had to sort his feet out and he looked comfortable at the back all game.

Alberto Moreno 7.4

Moreno had a really good game, he didn’t take as many risks as he normally has done and none of the errors that he is so prone to showed up on this occasion. Got forward well and offers a bit more pace than Milner on that left hand side, hopefully Klopp is continuing to work with him to cut out the silly errors and there is a way for him back in the side.

Jordan Henderson 6.4

Henderson didn’t put in the kind of performance he is capable of on this occasion but he didn’t need to, made a poor error when the ball nearly fell to Darren Bent but Karius bailed him out and he was substituted in the 55th minute for Emre Can.

Lucas Leiva 6.3

Lucas played in his normal position today instead of as a centre back and put in a decent shift albeit he wasn’t tested too much as we controlled the game.

Marco Grujic 6.4

Grujic started his first game for Liverpool tonight and he showed he had a good engine for a man of his size, the Serbian will need time to adapt to England but he showed promising signs in this game. Composed and confident on the ball and also can help out defensively, he gives us another option in the midfield area.

Phillipe Coutinho 8.7 Man of the match

Coutinho excelled today in a game where he should probably stand out in, set Liverpool off by crossing the ball into the box for Klaven’s goal, then got on the scoresheet himself with a wonderful finish after Firmino found him brilliantly and then he set up Origi with a lovely through ball. He constantly wanted the ball and looked dangerous whenever he had it.

Divock Origi 7.5

Origi started the game upfront and had a good game. Scored with a superb finish into the top corner and could of got more. The Belgian needs to improve his decision making at times as he found himself two on one and he should of played it to Firmino but he eventually lost the ball. Gives us a different option upfront but will still need to improve if he wants to oust Sturridge or Firmino out of the team.

Roberto Firmino 8.1

Firmino was a threat all game and he looks fully recovered from his injury he suffered before the Chelsea game. Played in Coutinho with a wonderful pass and these two seem to have a great connection with each other. Only thing missing from his performance tonight was a goal but otherwise he played extremely well.

Subs

Emre Can 6.3

Got 35 minutes here in his bid to get back to full match fitness and did a steady job when he came on for Henderson early in the second half. He will find it hard to get back into the starting eleven with how the other midfielders are playing right now but he is another great option for us.

Danny Ings 6.3

A player we haven’t seen in a long time is Danny Ings, his first appearance of the season as he aims to get back to match fitness. Ings has played in the under 23s a lot recently and Klopps has come out and said he sees him as part of his plans but it will be a long time until I expect to see him starting a Premier League game. Ings did alright here though, he could have won a penalty but the referee waved it away.

Ejaria N/A

Came on for the last 12 minutes of the game so can’t really give him a fair rating. Ejaria is a player that clearly impressed Klopp in preseason and he found himself on the bench for the Chelsea game as well so Klopp obviously rates the former Arsenal youth player.
