Liverpool agree loan deal for Lorenzo Melgarejo

Liverpool have agreed a deal in principle to sign Benfica left-back Lorenzo Melgarejo on a season long loan, subject to a work permit.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to add competition for Jose Enrique in the left back position and sees the Paraguayan as the ideal player to fill the void in the team.

Liverpool have the option to buy the 22-year-old at the end of the season for 7million, if he impresses during his loan spell.

Melgarejo is a very attacking full-back but can leave spaces at the back, but if Rodgers can get the best out of him then they have a talented and promising youngster at their hands. Melgarejo can play as a winger, as well as full-back, and some argue he plays better as a winger.

Liverpool will need to apply for a work permit though as the 22-year-old only has one cap for Paraguay.

Liverpool are considering making a move to bring Benfica left-back Lorenzo Melgarejo to Anfield on a season long loan.

Brendan Rodgers is looking to provide Jose Enrique with competition for the left-back slot in the team, as the only other left-back is young Jack Robinson who is not ready to make the step up just yet.

Liverpool will look have Malgarejo on a season long loan before deciding whether or not to purchase the 22-year-old from Benfica.

Malgarejo is a risk for Liverpool as he is very attacking and Benfica fans do not like him in the left-back position, often teams will target the Paraguay international.

If Liverpool do sign him Rodgers will need to improve the youngster defensively as he often attacks to high and leaves gaps when going forward. But if Liverpool do get the best out of him he could prove a hit a Anfield.
